Projects

University of Massachusetts Boston New Campus Center, Boston Harbor, Columbia Point Peninsula, Boston MA

Mr. Chike Odunukwe server as the hands-on Project Manager for the Civil Engineering design, wetlands permitting and construction phase services of the six-story, 331,000 SF, $84 million Campus Center facility that servers as the front door to the campus. The Campus Center facility consolidates student services and activities; offers new dining facilities; and conference center space. The project consisted of the construction of a building with two wings connected by a central atrium four levels high. Functional spaces, including a ballroom/conference center, student/faculty/alumni dining areas, food preparation and food service areas, campus bookstore and main entry lobby, are housed at the eastern wing facility.

University of MA, Boston

The western wing contains Student and business offices. The Campus Center facility is located over a former landfill site at the Boston Harbor, Columbia Point Peninsula. The work included site engineering services, roadways, layout, grading, sewer and water systems design, stormwater management studies, drainage analyses and design, permitting for the coastal wetlands, and construction phase services. Two at-grade parking lots with approximate capacity of 1,000 parking spaces were also designed to replace parking lost due to construction of the building.

Long Island Building facilities & Utilities study and Long Island Utilities Upgrade, Boston & Quincy, MA

Long Island Boston Bridge
Longisland Bridge, Boston

A Building Facilities (16 buildings) and Utilities Study was prepared for the Boston Public Facilities Department in behalf of the Boston Public Health Commission for its Long Island Campus in Boston Harbor. Mr. Odunukwe’s responsibility included the review and evaluation the sanitary sewer; domestic water; fire protection and storm drain systems; and preparation of recommendations for utility system upgrades with estimates of construction cost. The recommended utility improvements were prioritized with the proposed Building Facilities upgrades and build-outs, all presented in a report format.

Mr. Odunukwe managed the survey, engineering design and permitting services for the preparation of construction contracts for the Utilities Upgrades identified in the Building Facilities and Utilities Study. The first contract did include a booster pumping station and a new altitude valve chamber to support the existing water tank. The second contract replaces, as necessary, the sewer, water and drains in the campus, installs 19,500 LF 16-inch polyethylene and ductile pipe water transmission main, and repairs to the water tank. Insulated 16-inch polyethylene pipe will be installed on the Long Island Bridge, a distance of approximately 3,700 feet. Both construction contracts have involved extensive coordination with many public agencies and permitting authorities. Permitting has included Chapter 91, Water Quality Certificate, US Coast Guard, Boston Harbormaster, Massachusetts Historical Commission, and the Boston and Quincy Conservation Commissions.

Department of Capital Assets Management/Massachusetts Department of Correction - 1,024 cell maximum security Facility, Lancaster/Shirley, MA

Massachusetts Department of Correction - 1,024 cell maximum security Facility, Lancaster/Shirley, MA

Project Manager, Chike Odunukwe’s responsibilities for the project included all design, permitting and construction phase services for the site engineering of the 863 acre site, design-build maximum security facility project. The Correction facility occupied 36± acre of the site.

The design included relocation and maintenance of existing utilities during construction; roadways and parking lots, grading, sanitary and stromwater sewers, domestic and fire water distribution system and preparation of the Federal Pollution Prevention Plans. Special design feature include two detention/recharge basins that were designed to mitigate the enormous site stormwater runoff. The efficient site design resulted in a construction cost savings of approximately two million dollars; that made it possible for the Design/Build project team to win the contract.

1000 MW Hydro Electric Plant - US Bureau of Reclamation

Mr. Nnaerika managed, for the US Bureau of Reclamation; the total Power Plant Engineering department for an 8-unit hydro Electric Plant with a total of about 1000 MW generating output capacity. Functions include electrical systems designs and systems analysis for plant maintenance, capital improvement projects, systems integration and augmentation, Electrical and mechanical Equipment systems testing and commissioning, contract services; Value Engineering and Engineering resource and project management. Managed; the design and implementation of static excitation systems replacement; Electrical generator rewinds; power plant facility fire protection; High/medium voltage distribution; maintenance and testing.

Managed the electrical power systems design; implementation of a state-of-the-art research and development facility for semiconductor manufacturing industry. Provided an approved design guidelines and equipment specifications and performed valued engineering. Provided engineering management for electrical power distribution design and installation to an 181ksf world class research and development support facility with semiconductor electrical failure analysis and reliability labs. Developed design basis document and reviewed/approved equipment specification; engineering design, and testing. Managed electrical engineering design; testing; budget and schedule; supervised project closeout functions. Analyzed and recommended power requirement and distribution for SC manufacturing and testing equipment.

Material Selection for Fracture Resistant Storage Container

Problem statement: A company’s products (food storage containers) were experiencing failure by fracture at temperatures around 4 ºC. The goal was to select appropriate material that would not fail at the said temperature. Rex Kanu was the principal investigator that studied and developed new material formulations that would not fail at 4 ºC while maintaining processibility.

New Material Development for Health Hazard Free Flame Retardant
Problem statement:  Most traditional flame-retardants used halogens, which in some quarters are regarded as health hazards. The goal is to development new flame-retarded polymeric materials specific for fiber optics cable.  As a co-investigator, Rex Kanu studied the mechanical properties of the new materials.

New Organics Colorants/Pigment Investigation and Development for PVC products

Problem statement:  Many inorganic colorants/pigments contain heavy metals, which are known health hazards.  The objective is to replace these inorganic colorants/pigments with organics colorant/pigments, which do not have heavy metals.  As the principal investigator, Rex Kanu compounded the new formulation with a counter-rotating twin screw extruder and subsequently studied the effects of replacing the inorganic colorants/pigments with organic colorants/pigments on the mechanical properties of the extrudates. The effects of the colorants/pigments on the flow behavior of the PVC melts were also examined.
